Ghat- Ramni-Kuari-Joshimath

The trek to Kuari Pass can be organized either from Ghat or Joshimath. The Ramni- Kuari road is also known as Curzon road or Curzon Trail, because Lord Curzon a ken trekking enthusiast, trekked from Gwalior to Ramni and on to Kuaripass in the year 1905.

Kuari Pass trek via Ghat

The trek is most rewarding but longest and at times strenuous. Fascinating snow-clad peaks, rocks, forest covers, wildlife,a variety of wildflowers, wide stretches pastures, lakes, verdant valleys and unique bird species are the most significant features of this route. Ghat is a small hamlet in the glorious Nandakini valley and lies at a distance of 19 km motor road from Nandprayag. The trek begins from Ghat. Hotels and eating places are available for stay and meals. Porters, guides, equipment, etc can be hired from local tour operators based at Ghat.

Cuzon Trail

From Ghat to Ramni is a 10 km steep ascent and then a 4 km steep descent finds Sem Kharak through forests. It is a beautiful place and shepherds bring their cattle and goats here during the summer season. It is an ideal campsite. From here to Changi village is a 9 km steep descent through forests. There is a school and one can take shelter in it. There is a spectacular suspension bridge near the village, over the Birahi Ganga. From Jenni, Topanga is a 12 km gradual ascent through floods in the year 1898 and again in the year 1971 had caused great havoc and loss of several lives. There is a good campsite near the village. Drinking water is available here. The villagers also offer accommodation at reasonable rates. From Pana is the first 4 km is a steep ascent and then 1 km steep descent finds Bartoli through forests. It is a pasture land and offers a view of the Kuari Pass. Here, the palsies(shepherds) stay from May to October. A few local villagers also bring their cows and buffaloes during these months. They are very cooperative and offer milk on reasonable price, From Bartoli to Darwin, it is a 5 km gradual descent and steep ascent through meadows and forests. There is caveat Darwin. It is a good campsite. From Darwin to Kuari Pass is a 5 Pass which offers the greatest mountain views in the world.

From Kuri Pass, a very steep descent trail leads to Tapovan via Khulara and another gradual descent trail leads to Joshimath via Gordon and Auli Bugyals.

They climb the ridge above Tapovan and reach Gailgarh, where the trail coming from Gordon meets. One can also reach Kuari Pass from Auli bugyal through Gordon Top and this is the best idea. The main attraction of Curzon’s trail is the majestic view of the twin peaks of Nanda Devi, Kamet, Dronagiri, and Hathi-Ghodi Parvat. Along the trek, we’ll pass through pristine Rhododendron, Oak, and Deodar forests. Rare Himalayan Flora and Fauna are found aplenty on the trail. At Tapovan, there is a massive sulphur spring.
